---新华社建社80周年纪念丛书总序
八十载栉风沐雨，八十年春华秋实。今年，新华社迎来八十华诞。80年来，新华社忠实履行中央赋予的喉舌、耳目、智库和信息总汇重要职责，在党的新闻宣传工作中发挥了重要作用，为党团结带领全国各族人民夺取中国革命、建设和改革胜利作出了突出贡献。80年来，一代代新华人筚路蓝缕、艰苦奋斗，在实践中推动创新，在创新中加快发展，创造了一个又一个辉煌业绩，成就了蔚为壮观的新华事业。
自建社以来，新华社始终坚持正确政治方向和舆论导向，积极宣传党的理论和路线方针政策，充分反映人民群众的愿望和呼声，真实记录党和国家波澜壮阔的历史进程，及时报道国内外各领域的新情况，广泛传播中国政府的声音，为实现中华民族复兴伟业、全面建设小康社会提供了重要的精神动力和舆论支持；始终牢记根本宗旨，坚持贴近实际、贴近生活、贴近群众，不断增强新闻报道的亲和力、吸引力和感染力，推出了许多感人至深、喜闻乐见的典型，采写了一批影响深远、载入史册的精品力作；始终坚持改革创新，不断创新观念、内容、形式、方法和手段，新闻报道实现由以文字为主向文字、图片、音视频“三位一体”转变，形成了多语种、多媒体、多渠道、多层次、多功能的新闻发布体系；始终重视事业发展，顺应形势发展要求，积极拓展发展空间，从“茅屋—马背通讯社”发展成为采集网络覆盖全球、业态先进的现代全媒体机构。
近几年来，新华社按照高举旗帜、围绕大局、服务人民、改革创新的总要求，全面推进战略转型，加快科学发展步伐，大力推动“三个拓展”，着力创新工作思路、运营体制、文化业态，大力加强国际传播能力建设，事业实现了跨越式发展，基本建成融通讯社业务、报刊业务、网络业务、新媒体业务、电视业务、金融信息业务、信息数据库业务为一体的全媒体架构，培育了以新华网股份有限公司、中经社控股有限公司、中国新华新闻电视网有限公司和中国国际文化影像传播有限公司为核心的战略性、基础性、支柱性企业，初步形成以事业体制为主导、以公司化市场化资本化企业方式开展经营的多元体制有机共存、相互支撑、健康发展的新格局，整体实力和国际影响力显着提升。
抚今追昔，我们不会忘记为党的新闻事业和新华社事业积极开拓、奋力拼搏的一代又一代新华人。他们曾在战火中、马背上、窑洞里实践革命理想，曾在贝尔格莱德、巴格达、的黎波里的炮火中忠实履行职责，曾在四川汶川特大地震、青海玉树地震、甘肃舟曲泥石流灾害等重大突发事件中坚守报道一线，曾在北京奥运会、新中国成立60周年、上海世博会等重大战役性报道中全身心地投入⋯⋯在他们身上，集中体现了以革命理想主义和革命英雄主义为核心的新华精神。经过80年的积淀，新华精神已成为我们最可宝贵的精神财富，成为推动事业不断前进的动力源泉，成为镌刻在新华人心扉间、融化在新华人血液中最闪光的特质。 在新华社建社80周年之际，编辑出版《新华社80周年辉煌历程》、《新华社珍藏书画作品选》和《新华社80年摄影精品选》等纪念丛书，既是反映新华社新闻报道丰硕成果、事业发展辉煌成就，展示新华人迎难而上、团结奋斗的精神风貌的宝贵资料，也为进行优良传统教育、弘扬新华精神提供了有效途径，对于坚定信心和决心、集聚智慧和力量、开创新华社事业科学发展新局面具有重要意义。
踏平艰辛成大道，风雨高歌勇向前。新华社事业发展已站在了一个新的历史起点上，面临的任务更加艰巨、责任更加重大。我们相信，在党中央的坚强领导下，在全体新华人的共同努力下，新华社事业必将开创新的辉煌，建设国际一流的现代全媒体机构的理想必将早日实现！ 二○一一年十月

—Preamble to the Publication Series Marking Xinhua News Agency's 80th Anniversary

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of Xinhua News Agency.
Over eight decades, Xinhua has experienced pains and gains. Authorized by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, the agency has been faithfully fulfilling its obligations as an important communicator and news collector for the government and the public, a think tank and global news and information provider. Xinhua has played a vital role in the CPC's publicity work and contributed tremendously to the Party's success in bringing together and leading the Chinese people of all ethnic groups during revolutionary struggles, social-economic construction and reforms.
For eight decades, Xinhua's staff have worked diligently to seek innovation, accelerate development, achieve one victory after another and increase the agency's vitality.
Ever since its founding in 1931, Xinhua News Agency has unswervingly followed the political course chartered by the CPC, publicized the Party's theories, guidelines, principles and policies, provided sufficient coverage of the people's aspirations and demands, accurately recorded the development of the Party and the nation, reported the latest development in diverse sectors both at home and abroad in a timely manner, made China's voice heard widely in the world and provided strong support for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the building of a moderately prosperous society.
Through our consistent pursuit of truth and close contact with the masses, Xinhua has kept improving the quality of its news reporting and made its stories more appealing. The agency has presented readers with a series of soul-touching stories of role models in different walks of life and produced a wealth of influential masterpieces meriting special recognition in the history of Chinese journalism.
Xinhua has stuck to reform and innovation by updating its ideas and improving its content and means of its reporting. It has developed from a print media organization to a multidimensional agency with multilingual outreach. Xinhua has always attached great importance to business expansion and has tapped its potential for further development in line with the demands of the new era. The agency has evolved from "a news service in huts and on horseback" into a modern, omni-faceted media organization with a global news and information gathering network and advanced business patterns.
In recent years, Xinhua News Agency has aligned itself with China's overall interests and worked hard to better serve the people, while promoting its strategic transformation in an all-round way, accelerating development in a scientific manner, and implementing the strategy of "Three Expansions" - expansion from traditional news products to modern multimedia news and information products, from a media-oriented to an end-user-oriented customer base, and from the domestic to the international market.
Xinhua has endeavored to update its approach, operation mechanism and structures, improved its international communication capacity and built an omni-faceted media framework incorporating wire service with print media, online media, new media, television, financial information and database services. The agency has nurtured a number of strategic businesses, represented by China E-news Company, China Finance Corporation, China Xinhua News Network Corporation and China International Cultural Image Communication Company Limited. It has formulated a new growth pattern based on Xinhua's function as a public service institution and also employed market- and capital-oriented business patterns, and thus enhanced its overall capacity and international influence.
Looking back, we cherish the memories of Xinhua staff who worked diligently for the causes of journalism and Xinhua's development. Their ideals were fulfilled on battlefields, on horseback and in caves. They reported from conflicts in Belgrade, Baghdad and Tripoli, and at the scenes of the massive earthquakes in China's Sichuan and Qinghai provinces, and the fatal mudslide in Gansu Province. With the same enthusiasm, they covered the Beijing Olympic Games, the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China and the Shanghai World Expo. They embody the Xinhua spirit of idealism and heroism. This spirit has proven to be Xinhua's most valuable legacy, a driving force for the news agency and the most striking characteristic of Xinhua staff.
Xinhua has compiled a series of publications to mark its 80th founding anniversary, including a record of its past glories, a collection of calligraphy and paintings and a photo album. These are valuable materials demonstrating Xinhua's achievements in news reporting and business development, Xinhua staff's perseverance, team-spirit and diligence. They also provide an effective way for Xinhua to carry forward its fine traditions and glorify the Xinhua spirit. They are of great significance in reinforcing confidence and determination and gathering wisdom and strength for the breaking of new ground in Xinhua's scientific development.
The path to success is paved with hardship and Xinhua will advance courageously despite the difficulties ahead. Xinhua has ushered in a new period of development and will face even tougher endeavors and responsibilities. We are confident that, led by the CPC Central Committee and with the concerted efforts from all the staff, Xinhua will achieve more victories and fulfill its ideal of evolving into a world-class, modern, and omni-faceted media organization at an earlier date.
