I came to Shanghai on business in November 2010.One night after supper I was having a stroll at Xintiandi together with some old friends of mine. Though it was late autumn in the city, the weather was quite warm and comfortable. There was a hubbub at Xintiandi, a place featured with a combination of Chinese and western architectures embracing the content of Chinese characteristics and subculture of the city. While wandering, we by chance caught sight of a gallery named THIHANY. Never did we think that there was such a tranquil spot amidst a scene of bustling activity in Xintiandi. As we dropped in we were deeply entranced by all exquisite still life oil paintings in the gallery.
Oil paintings are elegant and serious art with three-dimensional effect. All the still-life paintings exhibited here are of unique workmanship and featured with light and colors so vivid that the inner beauty and feelings in them are expressed to a fullest extent and are impressive to eye. The weather beaten ‘Shikumen building’, the life-story telling ‘Violin’, the vibrant and vivacious ‘Music Score’ the never withered ‘bunch of flowers’,and so on, all of which are steadily composed, skillfully painted and finely depicted, give a vivid representation of facets of life of distress or affection or elegance. Standing in front of those vivid, varied and harmonious works one would forget all fatigue of the day and the hustle and bustle outside, and what remained seemed to be the spiritual communications between those paintings and me.
As introduced by gallery owner I learned that all those oil paintings are the works made by 38 year old painter SONG Yu. QI Baishi, the master painter once said, ‘work of art comes from real beauty but is a recast with the subjective feelings of the creator? Different from those who are indulged in running after fames and gains nowadays, SONG Yu has taken a serious and earnest attitude towards art. By working and studying hard he has laid a solid foundation in painting, meanwhile he is diligently experiencing life, carefully observing things around and is wholeheartedly devoted to his art creation. Such a young painter is estimable.
