Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Political Consultative Conference
With a long history that can be dated back to thousands of years ago, China remains a giant among all the nations across the world, and whenever she was trapped in jeopardy, there have always been patriots standing up, with no fear for death and with full devotion to the country, and fighting hard for her.
Since 1840s, China gradually slipped into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. Against the savage invasion by western forces and the corruption of the Government of Qing Dynasty, some revolutionists, led by Sun Yat-sen, set off an unceasing and courageous campaign against the imperialist and feudal forces, with the aim to “save people from mire and fire and raise the Country that was about to fall apart”, with the goal of national independence and liberation, and with a grand vision of a powerful China and affluent living conditions of Chinese people. The Xinhai Revolution, putting an end to the monarchy that had continued for thousands of years, has driven forward greatly the emancipation of minds of the Chinese people, and has unveiled a brand-new perspective for those who dedicated themselves to seeking ways to save China and her people. The revolution is a remarkable milestone that marks the endeavors of Chinese people struggling to change their destiny.
Long gone have they been, their spirit permanently lasts. Among the precious heritage left by the Revolution, we can see abundant political theories and thoughts. Besides the works of Sun Yat-sen, there had been lots of inspirational literary works to the credit of those revolutionists, such as “Revolutionary Army” by Zou Rong, “Letter to My Wife” by Lin Juemin, and “Ode to Wine” by Qiu Jin.Those works, either deep in thought or imposing and overwhelming in effect, have inspired lots of people, and they can be acclaimed as literature treasures in Chinese culture. They are also inspirational particularly when we are now on our way to the revival of our great nation.
Therefore, at the 100th anniversary of Xinhai Revolution, organized by Shanghai Municipal Political Consultative Conference, artists in Shanghai embarked upon the preparation of “Xinhai Figures and Their Thoughts • Fine Art Exhibition”, trying to represent the heroic deeds and deep thoughts of those revolutionists in front of us with traditional painting skills, and spur us forward toward the goal of establishing a well-off society.
The exhibition covers a myriad of areas such as calligraphy, paintings and seal cutting, including 100 paintings of “Figures in Xinhai Revolution Drawn by Dai Dunbang in Memory of the 100th Anniversary of Xinhai Revolution”, 100 pieces of “Calligraphic Works by Famous Calligraphers in Memory of the 100th Anniversary of Xinhai Revolution”, and 100 pieces of “Seals carved by Famous Seal Cutters in Memory of the 100th Anniversary of Xinhai Revolution”.
This volume is “Calligraphic Works by Famous Calligraphers in Memory of the 100th Anniversary of Xinhai Revolution”. Poems and articles originally created by 45 Xinhai revolutionists, now written down by 29 renowned calligraphers such as Chen Peiqiu, Gao Shixiong, Zhou Huijun, Lin Ximing, Han Min, Zhou Zhigao, Zhang Rushi and Han Tianheng, represent the glorious thoughts and history of Xinhai Revolution in an artistic manner. Therefore, I would also take this opportunity upon the publishing of the work to extend my sincere thank to them for their excellent contribution.
