Preface: Learning Diligently and Understanding Principle
Shao Dazhen
Yibin told me that it seemed that she had a predestined relationship with painting, for she had high marks for fine art class and she was keen on painting very much. As she grew up, she rented an undecorated apartment outside the college, in which she liked to draw some paintings on the walls and windows by means of the pigments brought to the home. After she graduated, she collected these paintings and turned them into a catalog just for a souvenir, which was unexpectedly recognized by an artist of Chinese painting who thought of her as talented in painting and encouraged her to create more artworks and pay more attention to such expertise. In 2008, Yibin met the material conditions and started to be engaged in painting. She just started to proceed on the path of art creation based on her own learning and exploration without any systematic learning or mentoring, for she said that she truly found some happiness in painting.
I am more than happy and privileged to see some artworks of Yibin and feel that she is truly fond of painting and does have the talent for painting. Regarding the talent for painting, someone may think that painting is something mysterious and they lack the ability to paint well, which is unilateral. Strictly speaking, everyone boasts the potential talent for painting, just different in degree. Moreover, what matters lies in whether someone adheres to self-discipline, whether someone is bold enough to express their talent or whether opportunity is seized and made use of.
Yibin didn’t receive the education or training in fine art school, on the contrary, she has been learning the theory and techniques of painting based on the interest and learning from the techniques of well-known artists. Bearing the relaxed mental state, she utilizes the stroke and color freely with little restriction by rules or principles, thus skillfully handling the relation of the overall and part layer, line and modeling and color in the painting, which indicates that she has talent for painting. Her starting point deserves encouragement meanwhile her boldness and confidence should be recognized.
I would like to tell Yibin that as for painting, whether it is systematically taught in school or learnt by yourself, only by hard work and continual practice can you achieve the fruit meanwhile no shortcut is available. Learning diligently, continuously practicing and mastering the principle of painting serve as the basic foundation of success in art meanwhile diligence is the most essential element. As for mastering the principle which can be divided into gradually comprehending and sudden insight, gradual comprehension means the fruit gained in the wake of long-term conscientious hard work. As gradual comprehension is accumulated, sudden insight will emerge, which may lead people to be suddenly enlightened. I would like to extend the sentence to Yibin for mutual encouragement and wish her every success in future painting career.
