PREFACE
They say that a picture paints a thousand words. Indeed, while the world’s fastest camera is capable of shooting 36.7 million photos per second, a top photographer will choose to record only the most touching moments, the ones that reveal the most meaning. With the application of technological innovations, from halogenated silver negatives to state-of-the-art digitization over the past six decades, China News Service (CNS) has borne witness to the vicissitudes of China and the rest of the world. In an era that’s characterized by massive photos in news coverage, CNS has focused on highlighting reported news to overseas readers and enhancing its services for overseas Chinese. In reaching this goal, several generations of photographers from CNS have expended ceaseless efforts and much time. They have always been fully aware of the arduousness of their task and its long-term significance to posterity.
CNS photojournalists have always been capable of framing historical moments with an international perspective in reporting news about Chinese people all over the world, unfolding a panorama of China’s development and depicting the latest goings-on in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. They are adept at capturing iconic moments with clarity and matter-of-fact vision, regardless of whether the subjects are political leaders, major events or simply everyday citizens in daily life. Whether covering the catastrophic Wenchuan Earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale or the SARS-fighting frontline in Xiaotangshan (a small town in Changping District in Beijing which had the highest concentration of SARS patients in Beijing), the photographers with CNS always make it their priority to arrive on the spot in time.
While 300 photographs may scarcely begin to cover a history of 60 years, it might also be pointed out that others may say it is a little hasty to use a simple camera to describe the vivid and complex lives people lead, but we still feel content to preserve a fraction of history with plain but soul-stirring photographs. These pictures give viewers a clear and retrospective view at the vicissitudes of years past. Each of these pictures tells an interesting story which will draw your attention and linger in your mind long after you have turned the page.
These photos bear witness to decades of historical moments and each of them have been chosen to touch your heart. Aside from outstanding photography skills, sincerity and passion have allowed these photographers to capture images that span time and space and transform the minutiae of daily life into pictorial words that speak to the humanity inside every one of us.
Many of the photographs depict harrowing events. At the instant they were taken, the eyes behind the lens may have been blurred by tears and the fingers pressing the shutters may have trembled. But these photos reveal a clarity that speaks not of a cold-blooded recording, but a desire to be eyewitnesses to history and the varied events that make it.
In much the same way as the greatest love is wordless, the sound of silence can sometimes be the most poignant sound of all – what cannot be described in a thousand words can always be conveyed by a single snap of the camera shutters.
