Preface
I am so happy that Junpei is going to publish his album of paintings!
I remember it was in the year of 1977, not long after “the Gang of Four” was overthrown, when Shanghai People’s Fine Arts Publishing House organized a group of self-taught painters to create a long series of picture-story books on Li Zicheng (1606-1645, the leader of the peasant uprising army in the late Ming Dynasty). I got acquainted with Junpei and started our friendship there.
Junpei’s ancestry hometown is in Guangdong in the Southern part of China, but he looks like a man from the Northeastern part of the country, so full of vitality and energy. In the days of our working together, Junpei was wholeheartedly dedicated to the creation of Li Zicheng, giving every piece of energy to this long series of picture-story books.
Junpei has always been diligent and eager to learn. He did not start his career with the Chinese painting, but with his resilience and great efforts, he has become a key figure in the field of Chinese painting. We shared our learning with each other and explored together for true essence of art. We therefore cherished deep friendship.
Because of our job change, Junpei and I were later placed in two different art institutions. However, we work for the same art profession we are both so dedicated to. After years of art creation and practice, Junpei has achieved tremendous success in his arts. Although we don’t have much chance to see each other, I get extremely happy and excited every time I see Junpei’s art works on different occasions. In his beautiful world of arts, I envision his dreams, his true passion and love.
Time passed by, and we are gradually stepping into an “old age”. However, when we look at the work we have put our hearts to, and look back at the path we have travelled, we have every reason to feel contented and tell ourselves: we did not waste our youth and times -- we are fortunate!
Maybe this is our answer to life from us Lao San Jie (junior and senior high school graduates of
1966-1968 -- a special generation going through the Cultural Revolution).
May Junpei keep going on his beloved art road and never stop!
