序
这是一座别样的城市。
她静处太平洋西岸，气韵不凡、风华绝代；
她伫立中国东南大地，辐射全国、追求卓越；
她是地球上最具世界主义的城市之一，海纳百川、兼容并蓄……
这座城市，就是上海！
从通商口岸、列强租界，到“东方魔都”、“远东巴黎”；从旧时代工商金融业中心，到新时期共和国“经济长子”；从上世纪铸造辉煌的传统工业中心，到新世纪高科技、新产业崛起的“龙头”……一路而来，浓缩了中国近代、现代直至当代发展，跨越三个世纪嬗变的上海，激荡出不绝的历史回响，同时也记录下无数岁月留影。
自开埠以来，上海从不缺少世界摄影家的光顾，无论是十里洋场的灯红酒绿，还是改革开放的万丈高楼；无论是过去东西相融、华洋交汇的悠远风情，还是如今中国发展“新引擎”的一日千里，她，从来都是摄影家的梦想之城、未来之都。
尽管书柜里，仅最近10年，境内外出版的记录上海的大型画册已不下十余本，但我们仍然在世博会落幕后的2011年，联合上海市人民政府外事办公室，先后向海内外摄影家发出了沪上采风的邀请。这一决定，是缘于借助世界摄影家独特的艺术视角，让世人领略这座东方都市最新建设发展、风情变化、民生面貌的真切期望。
因为，世博后的上海值得记录。
世博后上海的活力与魅力究竟在哪里？我们深信，正在于她由更多物质建设、更快经济增长，向更美精神追求、更深文化积淀延伸的渐进而又持续的跨越式提升中。这样的提升，必然体现在上海不断深厚的文化气息、持续不懈的科技创新、日益增进的社会和谐中。
在2011年落英缤纷的初秋和2012年生机勃发的初春，来自世界各地的摄影家和国内部分摄影家，先后在黄浦江畔，与人文上海经历了心动的邂逅，与智慧上海碰撞出激情的火花，与和谐上海合奏起华美的乐章。而今天，当我们打开这本画册，相信每一位读者都能通过艺术家们的目光与心灵，感受世博后上海的发展脉动、文化追求与和谐韵味。
本次活动是继1999年举办“世界摄影家看上海”之后，申城第二次邀请海内外摄影家来沪采风，共同记录上海发展。这也是12年来，继“世界电视人世纪之交看上海”、“世界画家看上海”、“海外作家看上海”等之后，“海外人士看上海”系列活动的第七次举办。
事实上，伴随着新世纪以来上海发展脚步的前行，摄影家们特别是海外摄影家看上海的视角也在潜移默化地由更多关注建设成就，转向关注文化发展，关注民生现实，关注这片土地上人们的生活状态与幸福指数。
出于这样的关注，中外摄影家们近乎痴迷地走进这座城市的大街小巷，步入素不相识的寻常人家，无拘无束地亲身感受、体会上海的活力与魅力，开放与自信。
我们相信，正是与日俱增的活力与魅力，在不断推进上海的开放与自信；而与时俱进的开放与自信，也在不断增添上海的活力与魅力。
这，就是上海，一座值得仔细品味的城市，一个让人流连忘返的地方……

Foreword
This is an extraordinary city.
With great charm and elegance, it sits quietly to the west of the Pacific.
It stands solemnly in the southeast of China, attracting brilliant talents from across the country to do miracles.
As a cosmopolitan city, it takes in anything and everything like the ocean takes in every river.
Here is Shanghai!
From an open port and international settlement to the “Oriental Magic City” and “Paris of the Far East”, from an old commercial, industrial and financial centre to the “economic crown prince” in a new Republic, from last century’s traditional industrial centre that boasted brilliant achievements to the new century’s emerging leader in hi-tech industry, the transformation of Shanghai, an epitome of China’s development, keeps an historical memory that is still echoing today.
Since its opening to the outside world as a trading port,photographers from all over the world have never stopped coming to Shanghai.Whether a metropolis full of foreign adventures with feasting and revelry, or a city of skyscrapers thanks to the opening-up and reform policy,whether an exotic place where the east and native meets with the west and foreign, or as a powerful engine driving China on a highway towards modernity, Shanghai has always been a dreamland and future city on the film of world photographers.
With over a dozen photo albums published domestically and overseas over the last decade, in 2011,together with the Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government,we invite photographers from home and abroad to come again take pictures of Shanghai after the 2010 World Expo. The invitation is a sincere hope that the city will show its recent construction and development, local conditions and customs, and people¡¯s livelihood,through world-class photographers’unique perspectives.
This is because Shanghai after the Expo is noteworthy.
Where is Shanghai¡¯s vitality and charm after the Expo? We believe the charm lies in its gradual and sustained advance from material richness and economic growth to higher spiritual pursuit and deeper cultural accumulation. This advance is manifested by Shanghai¡¯s broader cultural landscape, unremitting scientific and technological innovations and breakthroughs, and increasing social harmony.
In autumn of 2011 and in spring of 2012,world photographers together with part of the domestic photographers meet alongside the Huangpu River with an attractive and humanistic Shanghai, an exciting and intellectual Shanghai, and a magnificent and harmonious Shanghai. Today, when you look through this album, through these photographers’eyes and heart, you will certainly feel the strong pulse, appreciate the spiritual pursuits, and marvel at the harmonious charm of a developing Shanghai.
This is the second time that we invite foreign photographers to take pictures of Shanghai to record the development of Shanghai with Chinese photographers, since“Shanghai in the Eyes of World Photographers” back in 1999. It is also the seventh of a series of events in the last twelve years under the name of “Shanghai in the Eyes of Foreigners,” following “A New-century Shanghai on TV Screen”, “Shanghai in the Eyes of World Artists”, “Shanghai in the Eyes of World Writers”, etc. .
In fact, to keep pace with Shanghai¡¯s development, photographers—especially overseas ones—have imperceptibly shifted their perspectives from architectual achievements to cultural advancements, to the civil life, welfare,and happiness of the people living on this piece of land.
Because of this shift, curious and devoted Chinese and foreign photographers walked down streets and alleys, visited ordinary families, tasted freely for themselves the real life in Shanghai and marveled at its vitality and charm, openness and confidence.
We believe it is Shanghai¡¯s vitality and charm that are increasing its openness and confidence, and this ever-increasing openness and confidence is adding new vitality and charm to this city.
Here is Shanghai, a noteworthy city and a place to linger on.
