Foreword
Wu Guanzhong is a figure with unique significance and value in Chinese fine arts history over the second half of the 20th century. He not only made great contributions to the integration of western and Chinese arts in his creating practice, but also exerted a major influence on the development process of Chinese contemporary fine arts after the 1980s.In particular, his views defending painting’s formal beauty and abstract beauty in the late 1970s and early 1980s inspired the Chinese contemporary art workers to explore, and promoted the development and prosperity of contemporary art. What’s more, his beautiful prose brimming with deep insights and real emotions toward art and life also won the affection of readers at home and abroad.
Wu Guanzhong devoted his life to the exploration of the nationalization of oil paintings and modernization of Chinese traditional paintings and achieved outstanding results. His greatest contribution is that he successfully expressed Chinese-style artistic conception in the form of oil painting and created a unique Chinese style oil painting language and aesthetic sentiment. His achievements in the latter aspect were demonstrated by his combination of western painting’s expressive force in style, plane, color and modeling with ink painting’s dots and lines, which gave birth to a new scenario combining modern aesthetics and oriental sentiment.
Wu Guanzhong had always put great emphasis on art’s function in aesthetic education. In his later years,he donated a large number of his masterpieces to public art organizations at home and abroad.Out of the love for Shanghai Art Museum and the city,he donated 87 representative artworks of him including oil paintings, ink paintings and sketches from life, covering all the important works in different stages of him since the 1950s,to Shanghai Art Museum in 2005 and 2008.After his death,Wu Keyu, his eldest son, donated 23 of his works including oil paintings, ink paintings and sketches to Shanghai Art Museum in this May,further enriched and improved the Wu Guanzhong collection series at Shanghai Art Museum. Now,it collects 110 of Wu Guanzhong’s works and is the art organization with most rich and complete Wu Guanzhong’s works at home.
