PREFACE
The great Zhang Jiang is what I always call that artist I admire. Every time he phones me, a stroke of brightness flashes across my heart, which brings something unique from Tibetan religion.
Eighteen years ago, Zhang Jiang and I went to the west part to gather source material for our works. While we were on our way to Serthar Buddhist Institute, we were held up in Tagong. For three days, we stranded along the wild road and could not get a lift. But it was in these three days and nights that we talked freely our views of life, death, faith and art, which we both love. From then on we became bosom friends on arts, which also avails me to appreciate how he created his paintings close and share his artistic achievement of almost twenty years. Too numerous for me to count down how many prizes has he got or how many exhibitions has he held in Japan and France. For many artists, to exhibit in the Louvre Museum or Grand Palace is a long cherished goal; but for Zhang Jiang, it was quite common. I clearly remember what an exited big American collector told me griping my hands: “since I collected works by Chen Yifei 30 years ago in New York, I have attended to artists from China mainland. When I happened to see Zhang Jiang’s works in Europe, I could hardly tell how excited I was…”
That is Zhang Jiang, a spotlighted artist in the global stage. But however successful he is in art, he remains an ascetic, crawling forward among the sacred mountains and along the holy lakes in the Tibetan snowfield piously on his route of pilgrimage. He is one of few great artists currently who express faith with life. Every autumn he would bring us with a surprise, basking us in the brilliant sunshine of Tibet and indulging us in the distant pastoral songs on plateaus. From the spiritual painting drawn by Zhang Jiang, we perceive the passion, the high mind and the sincerity of a prominent artist.
We will be looking forward to that surprise again in Taipei this autumn.
