In May and June of this year, we joined Mr. Li Xu to visit the artists in Beijing, Tianjin and Shenyang. We observed plenty of excellent works in these artists’ studios and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality – many of the artworks made a deep impact on us and we are convinced that the hope and future of Chinese abstract art can be found in these artists.
Abstract art has thrived and flourished in the West for over 100 years, but it is still a relatively fresh concept for the regular Chinese people, who find it difficult to comprehend why an artist would create something that does not speak for itself. However, in early Chinese history, the people did learn how to appreciate the beauty of abstract art. For example, ancient Chinese people had a great affection for the Lake Tai Stone and also for grass script, despite lacking a rational understanding of the concept of abstract art.
As the founders of this art center, we believe that it is necessary to push the development of abstract art in China further. This desire matches well with the thoughts of Mr. Li Xu, who has been continuously planning abstract art exhibition. Hence, we decided to hold the “Lines” Chinese Abstract Art Exhibition in Creek Art. We hope that this exhibition can be a window for everyone to acknowledge and understand Chinese abstract art.
