内容提要
Foreword
This book tells the story of our travels in China’s southwest in the summer of 2009. During our fifty-seven day tour, including fifty-four days on our own, Betty (seventy-six) and I (nearly eighty-two) visited more than twenty places in this region which is so full of interest for tourists. We stayed at beautiful Lugu Lake with its distinctive matriarchal society for fifteen days.
It is certainly not fair that, although the book has been written by both Betty and me, only my name appears on the front cover. Our arrangement was that I would write the draft and then Betty would correct my English and enrich the content. While writing the first few chapters I used the pronoun “we” but found it very awkward. After discussion we decided to change “we” to “I” and thus had to use my name as the author and consider Betty the editor.
Both Betty and I were born in Shanghai and we have been to every big city, province and autonomous region in the Chinese Mainland; still, we feel that we have a lot to see and to learn about this vast country. During our fifty-seven day qingting dian shui (like a dragonfly skimming the surface of the water) visit we did learn more about the daily life of the Chinese people we saw and about episodes from Chinese history, albeit very superficially.
