　　2008年，是中国改革开放30周年，30年的发展铸就了新苏州的辉煌；2009年，是新中国诞生60周年，苏州的发展谱写了新中国的华章。
　　在改革开放春风的沐浴下，勤劳智慧的苏州人民勇于实践、开拓创新，先是乡镇工业的崛起，继而开放型经济的发展，以“张家港精神”、“昆山之路”和“园区经验”等群体性实践，铸就和丰富了以“崇文、融和、创新、致远”为核心内容的苏州精神。在这样一种人文精神的推动之下，经济持续快速发展，社会事业全面进步，城乡面貌发生了翻天覆地的变化，千年古城焕发了新的生机和活力。目前，苏州人民正在科学发展观的引领下，加快新型工业化和新型城市化进程，积极构建资源节约型社会和环境友好型社会，朝着基本现代化方向率先发展、科学发展、和谐发展。
　　苏州这30年大发展、大变化的成果，取决于我国改革开放的大政方针，离不开国际经济技术梯度转移的大背景，受益于苏州得天独厚的区位优势和丰富深厚的历史文化底蕴。而所有这一切，正是东方人杰出智慧的结晶，同时也是东西方文明融合的结果。这就验证了流传于上世纪末的一句箴言：“21世纪是全球经济一体化的时代，也是东西方文明大交融的时代”。苏州人创造了辉煌的今天，苏州的明天将更加辉煌。
　　30年风雨如磐，30年锦绣似画。特编纂此画册，并命名为《苏州---东方人的智慧》，撷其精华，摄其风韵，扬其精神，谨以此纪念中国改革开放30周年，并向中华人民共和国成立60周年献礼。

　　The year 2008 marked the 30th anniversary of reform and opening up in China. During the last three decades the city of Suzhou has achieved wonderful success in its development. The year 2009 marks another milestone with the 60th anniversary of the founding of The People’s Republic of China. The city of Suzhou has witnessed all of these great events and will continue to play an essential role in the framework of China.
　　With opening up and reform，the people of Suzhou seized opportunity and made great achievements through dedication and constant innovation. With great efficiency，Suzhou organized its various townships into administrative enterprises. The best known examples of which are Zhangjiagang，Kunshan and Suzhou Industrial Park. With their success they further solidify the core values of ”Culture，Harmony，Innovation and Aspiration“ that make Suzhou a great place to do business. For these efforts，the city has enjoyed a fast yet steady growth in its economy and has built a sustainable and culturally rich society. Modern architectural developments have and continue to reshape the skyline of the city and surrounding rural areas，however the ancient city and historical sites of Suzhou have been perfectly preserved and continue to remain vibrant and dynamic. Guided by a scientific outlook on development，the people of Suzhou are forging ahead along a new path of industrial and urban development that places priority on resource conservation and building an environmental-friendly society.
　　The last thirty years of rapid development and dramatic changes that have taken place in Suzhou are due in great part to China’s reform and opening up policy. Likewise，international economic relations and partnership through shared technologies have spurred these successes. A favorable geographic location and a profound historical and cultural heritage have also been indispensable to the city’s growth. However，it is important to recognize that globalization is a powerful force that will continue to reshape economies and present new challenges and opportunities. Suzhou is poised and confident to continue on a path of success toward even brighter future.
　　This photographic album has been compiled to commemorate the past thirty years of remarkable achievements that have taken place in Suzhou. We dedicate this album，“Suzhou-Eastern Wisdom”as a gift to the 30th anniversary of reform and opening up and to the 60th anniversary of the founding of The People’s Republic of China.
