Preface
LAI HSIANGLING|DIRECTOR, ROCKBUND ART MUSEUM
For over half a century, museums have been facing increasing demands for social interaction while constantly involved in discussions of their own missions and purposes; meanwhile, museum operations reflect the features of an information society and through exhibitions and educational functions, these institutions are expanding their interface with the public, responding actively to globalization as well as to needs for lifelong learning. Museums in the new century emphasize collective wisdom and shared experience. They focus on social coherence, cultural diversity and public value. Today’s museums are clearly more than arcades for transfer of knowledge. They are where social relations take place and take shape.
In the metropolitan city of Shanghai, where culture and art sprouts and blossoms, Rockbund Art Museum, in keeping with its cultural tradition, has become a contemporary art space that continues to uphold an operational philosophy of openness. That is, the museum is encouraging and capable to embrace and present multifaceted expressions of contemporary art and to help guide the audience as they explore the inspirations and concepts behind the works. Further, the operators are interested in extending the physicality of museum space in order to introduce and promote art as a part of urban reengineering so that museums assume a new identity as an underlying platform for contemporary culture, social reality, and city life. Ultimately, the openness of museums lies in how the system delivers knowledge in the most effective way—how it builds up forums for information exchange and creativity so to enable a connection for the audience, together with any observation and reflection thereon, between individuality, environment, society and the world at large.
As the first international group exhibition at Rockbund Art Museum, By Day, By Night, or some (special) things a museum can do is the finale in a series of exhibitions that celebrate the museum’s inauguration. It has been our great pleasure to work with Mr. Hou Hanru on this project, during which time we have shared insights on contemporary art development and the positioning of contemporary art museums. As an internationally renowned and active curator, Hou sees our exhibitions as “important sites of experiment for social reality and the future of culture.” His curatorial achievements over the years have been highly influential to current discourses on art museums’ social responsibilities and artists’ social roles. We are deeply indebted to Hou Hanru for his collaboration, and for all of his inspirations and brilliant ideas. Through the efforts of the curator, we were also able to commission artists from diverse backgrounds—such as Choi Jeong-Hwa, Tu Weicheng, Sam Samore, Sun Xun, Shahzia Sikander, Du Yun, Nedko Solakov, Zhou Tiehai, and Pedro Cabrita Reis—to whom we give our highest regards and most sincere gratitude.
In addition to what constitute a typical daytime exhibition, the museum team, in collaboration with the curator, presents By Night @ RAM, a project which is open to the public on evenings and on weekends. It features a night school program highlighted by lectures, performances, workshops, and a “film festival” that is largely dedicated to the viewing experience. The events unfold in an effort to explore new alternatives for contemporary city life, leading to conversation about the social functions of museums and art. Our objective for this program is to transform the museum into an open space where the public may get closer to and participate in art. The night school program enjoyed the support from Open Media Lab at China Academy of Art, Art World Magazine, Art China Magazine, Ray Art Center, Xiyi Tang, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, among other cultural and media institutions. Our sincere appreciation goes to all the participants.
In particular, I would like to thank Mr. Thomas Ou, chairman of Rockbund Art Museum, for his trust and guidance, which fundamentally enabled us to pursue this project with a highly dedicated mind. The support from our Rockbund staff further provided important impetus for the success of the project. Finally, I would like to thank all the colleagues at Rockbund Art Museum, whose professionalism, commitment and perseverance will accompany our young museum as it springs up for sustained growth.(文章来源:《日以继夜,或美术馆可为之若干事》)
