前 言
今天,当我们谈到中国,谈到华夏的传统时,许多人的头脑中会不由自主地浮现出不少与清代有关的视觉符号,尽管那个朝代离我们很近,尽管由满人所主导的审美趣味不是很高。如果要寻找中华民族的审美本原,我们必须回望更遥远的历史,如果要探究中国人的视觉基因,我们一定要重视五千年来的文明之路。
王燮达近年来的作品,一直以其素雅端庄的古风和清丽飘逸的气度为标志,从根源上追溯着汉民族美学的源头。他的雕塑与绘画,往往以单纯而质朴的线条为主体,架构出简约而空灵的造型。在那些貌似上古原始图腾和早期书法符号的视觉形态中,王燮达探索着抽象而纯粹的美感,对体量节奏的把握刚柔并济,对空间韵律的经营举重若轻,这些作品令人一见倾心、一见如故的缘由,也许正是创作者与观看者对某种永恒的简约之美所产生的刹那共鸣。
作为一个在当代生活中执著追寻古意的人,王燮达对书法和古琴的持续研习,使他常年延续着旧日文人的精神修炼状态,在躁动、喧嚣而功利的都市环境中,他难能可贵地在生活和创作中保持着平和稳定的高度统一。
面对充满变数的21世纪,每一个民族的文化传统,都必须找到全新的当代化语法,以求在审美表达方面与时代的更迭保持同步。只有这样,传统才可以被更为年轻的一代自觉研习并主动传承。王燮达的作品,让我们在纷繁变化的氛围中感受到他淡定自如的信心,他对民族美感的精练表达,让我们看到了一种典雅的范例。

Preface
Today, when speaking of China and Chinese traditions, many people would involuntarily think of quite some visual symbols related with Qing Dynasty, though that dynasty was close to us, and the aesthetic interests dominated by Manchu people were actually not sophisticated. If trying to seek for the aesthetic origin of Chinese nation, we have to retrospect to the more distant history; if trying to probe into Chinese people's visual genes, we must pay attention to the path of civilization for five thousand years.
Wang Xieda's recent works have always taken the tasteful and sedate ancient style and the refreshing and elegant rhyme as the sign, fundamentally tracing back to the origin of Chinese nation's aesthetics. Usually mainly relying on simple and unpretentious lines, his sculpture and painting construct concise and unpredictable molding. Among those visual forms like primitive totems and early calligraphic symbols, Wang explores the abstract and pure aesthetic feeling, perfectly grasping the pulse of dimensions, and appropriately creating the rhythm of space. The reason why the viewers fall in love with his works at first sight is perhaps the momentary resonance produced at the instance when the creator and the viewers seeing a certain eternal beauty of concision.
As a person persistently pursuing interest and charm of antique taste in contemporary life, Wang insists on studying calligraphy and ancient stringed instrument, which enables him to continue the spiritual status of self-cultivation of ancient literati all the time. In the impetuous, clamorous and practical urban environment, it's rare and commendable for him to maintain placid and consistent level of achievement in life and creation.
Facing the changeful 21st century, each nation's cultural traditions must find the brand new contemporary grammars to keep pace with the times' alterations in the aspect of aesthetic expression. Only in this way, the younger generation could voluntarily study and initiatively inherit the traditions. In the complicated and variable surroundings, we may perceive the composed and easy confidence from Wang Xieda's works, and his proficient expression about national aesthetics shows us a graceful example.
