Pei Yongmei is one of the most talented students I have taught, which is recognized by most people in China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). Paintings in this album are fruits of her painting life from childhood to study period (she completed high school courses in Affiliated Middle S chool of CAFA, and undergraduate and postgraduate courses in CAFA) and to current teaching period in CAFA. This album is a natural representation of her feelings about life. As a crystal of her life and art, it is quite meaningful.
At middle age, one will have a good harvest.
Life is a continuous process of experiencing and feeling. Art practices should be performed in combination with life.
In this album, Pei wrote an essay Half Dreaming and Half Awake which is a perfect reflection of her feelings about real life and the dream.
Her recent painting Waiting in Denggala can be considered as a symbol of a new creation period. The picture shows tranquility and is thought-provoking. I am so happy for her new achievement.
Half dreaming and half awake is a theoretical issue which needs the attention of theorists.
Dream and imagination is the unique source of compensation for one’s limitations. Artists who are involved in life can have a through understanding of life. Life is the real source of art. But dream is purposeless and imagination is not restricted by reality, thus, art for the purpose of art is not necessarily wrong. Purposelessness is sine qua non for the existence of art since sense is a necessary part of one’s life and it can coexist with artistic thinking in ones mind. In this way, half dreaming and half awake may be one’s common and natural state.
As long as Pei follows what she has chosen, I believe she will create more excellent works in the future. Best wishes to her.
