蔡启文的这些摄影作品始终在寻求安宁——山河修辞里有一种终极志向,把这一切安放在某个地方,让它们尊严、宁息。它们在艺术上和精神上都是雄辩的结论:在执着与壮阔之中运行着浩瀚的慈悲——并不是悲悯,因悲悯无论大小,都预设了拯救,上天的拯救或人的自我拯救,而蔡启文镜头里的世界并非抵达拯救,它们其实是告诉我们大地在那里,那就是起点和终点,大地就是“慈悲”,它是这人间世,它承受和包容一切,一切爱欲和一切苦,悲欣交集。
就这样,远望着,在一种传统的想象和语言中,我们的经验、记忆和命运找到了形式也找到了精神。蔡启文求证了这个乌托邦的可能性,他坚定地认为,在天堂和俗世大地之间并非无路可通,那种探索意志、对那探索意志所持的想象和表现的激情本身就向人们敞开了可能的路径。
对于蔡启文来说,摄影绝不是浪漫、感伤的柔弱咏叹,他力图提供另一种对中国的认识路径,期望将被轻率物质化的山河的意义,加入正在迅速更新的对中国精神的认同和重构中去。

Looking Far
The search for peace is always the quest for Cai Qiwen’s photograph. There is a will to the rhetoric of mountain and river, that it shall be put somewhere and given dignity and peace. No matter artistically or spiritually, there is a grand mercy amid the determination and greatness. It is mercy, not pity, for pity presumes salvation, it God’s salvation or self-salvation. However, the destination of Cai Qiwen’s works is not salvation, but to tell us where the land is. The land is the beginning and the ending. Land is mercy. Land is the world, able to shoulder and hold everything: love, lust, the sweet, the bitter and the bitter-sweet.
Looking far, in traditional imagination and language, we have found the form and the spirit for our experience, our memory and our destiny. Cai Qiwen is exploring the possibility of this Utopia. He firmly believes that there must be a way between heaven and the secular land. Actually, he has already found a way with his strong will and his imagination and passion in exploration.
For Cai Qiwen, photography is not romantic, sentimental sighing. He is trying to provide a new way to understand China. He is hoping that the significance of the materialized mountains and rivers can be added to the identifying and restructuring of Chinese spirit.
